Facebook owner Meta will launch an app Threads to rival Twitter on Thursday, July 6. Meta describes Threads as a “text based conversation app”.

The app has been in the works for a while and the launch has finally been announced.

The app is available for pre-order on the Apple App Store. The app will be linked to Instagram, said Meta, so that Instagram subscribers can keep their existing usernames and user IDs.

The move is the latest in a rivalry between Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter owner Elon Musk.

The announcement by Meta comes amidst backlash against Twitter and its owner Musk after he announced the decision to severely restrict the number of tweets that a non-verified user can see. A decision was also announced recently allow only logged-in users to see tweets.

A preview of the “text-based conversation” app says Threads will be a place “where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow”.
