Indian-origin professor Joyeeta Gupta awarded ‘Dutch Nobel Prize’

Joyeeta Gupta, an Indian-origin professor at the University of Amsterdam, where she is the professor of Environment and Development in the Global South, has won the Spinoza Prize for 2023, the highest science award in the Netherlands and therefore, sometimes referred to as the ‘Dutch Nobel Prize’.

Joyeeta Gupta, an Indian-origin professor at the University of Amsterdam has won the highest science award in the Netherlands, the Spinoza Prize, sometimes referred to as the ‘Dutch Nobel Prize’, for researching on how to solve issues arising from climate change through good governance.

This was stated by the university on June 7, where Gupta is the professor of Environment and Development in the Global South. The Prize is awarded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO in Dutch).

She has been awarded for her “outstanding, pioneering and inspiring scientific work in which she focuses on a just and sustainable world”, said the university.

The award will be handed over on October 4. It has a cash component of €1.5 million euros, which has to be spent on scientific research and activities related to knowledge utilisation.

In addition to Gupta, Toby Kiers, professor of Mutualistic Interactions at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will receive a Spinoza Prize.
