The Indian women’s hockey team failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics after losing the third-place match to Japan 0-1 in Ranchi today.

The top three teams in the qualifying tournament—one of several being held simultaneously across the world—can play in Paris. From this set of qualifiers, Germany, USA and Japan have qualified.

This will be the first time since 2016 that the women’s team would not play in the quadrennial games.

Japan’s goal came in the 6th minute, when Kana Urata scored from a penalty corner. India tried very hard, but Japan held on to its lead and made it to Paris.
