Sunil Chhetri announces retirement

Sunil Chhetri, the most revered figure in current Indian football, has declared his decision to retire from international football, culminating a celebrated two-decade-long journey, after the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata on June 6.

His decision, conveyed through a heartfelt video shared on his social media platforms, marks the end of an era in Indian football. Debuting against Pakistan on June 12, 2005, Chhetri etched his name in history by scoring his first goal for India in the same match, initiating a prolific career that has inspired generations.

The 39-year-old stands as the third-highest scorer in international matches among active players (after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi), boasting an impressive tally of 94 goals in 150 appearances for the national team.

His illustrious tenure includes an unprecedented six AIFF Player of the Year awards, along with prestigious accolades such as the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Padma Shri in 2019. Throughout his tenure, Chhetri’s leadership and prowess have been instrumental in elevating Indian football on the global stage, leaving an indelible mark on the sport in the country.

As India prepares for Chhetri’s final international match next month, the nation reflects on his remarkable contributions to the sport.
