Abhijit Ganguly resigned from the judiciary this morning, something which he had announced he would do a few days back.

The former judge of the Calcutta High Court said, while addressing the media at his residence, that he would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, March 7. Newsz Now had written about this a few days back. He said at the press conference that he had contacted the BJP in the last five to six days.

In an interview with the News18 channel, while saying that Narendra Modi “is a hardworking man who is trying to pull India out of great danger” and that ”his leadership is definitely good”, about Mamata Banerjee, he said that “although she is a veteran politician, my opinion of her is poor … She fails in every aspect — as an administrator, leader…”.

Later, addressing the media, he described her as a veteran political leader who has risen through struggle, but, without naming him, characterised her nephew and political heir apparent Abhishek Banerjee as a “talpatar shepai”, meaning, a tin soldier.

He also called Trinamool Congress a “party of miscreants”.

About his reason for joining the BJP, he said it was because “it is the only national party which is fighting against Trinamool Congress’ corruption”.

Ganguly retaliated to Trinamool’s allegations of him giving biased judgements against the party out of vendetta, by challenging to prove any of his orders as ‘biased’ in a court of law.

He tactfully evaded questions on the Narada sting operation, which implicated Suvendu Adhikari, then with Trinamool but now a top BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the assembly, and said that it was a ploy “hatched by a ‘talpatar shepai‘ against senior leaders of the party to grab power and orchestrate a coup d’etat”.

When asked about senior advocate and Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee’s statements, he said, “He is a blot on the judicial system, not me.”

He said that there are several truthful leaders in the Trinamool Congress, but they are stuck within the cogs and can’t move after joining the party.

Calling Trinamool Congress a “jatra party”, Ganguly said that it has cheated the people of Bengal, and that he will, very soon, receive thousands of documents related to a financial scam related to the implementation of the MGNREGA scheme.

On the Sandeshkhali incident, he alleged that the police purposefully did not act against Sheikh Shahjahan and that the CBI should investigate it. Incidentally, the Calcutta High Court today gave an order for the CBI to investigate Sandeshkhali and has also asked the West Bengal Police to hand Sheikh Shahjahan over to the Union government agency.

About the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said he felt this general election will see “less of hooliganism”.
