Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Ganguly declared on Sunday that he’ll be putting down his papers on Tuesday, March 5 in order to join politics.

While the often headlines-grabbing judge hasn’t made it clear which party he is set to join, speculations are rife that he will don the saffron jersey. BJP sources said that Ganguly will join the party in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his rally in Barasat on Wednesday, March 6.

The sources also said the soon-to-be former judge will contest the upcoming general election from Tamluk constituency in East Medinipur district.

The district of East Medinipur consists of two Lok Sabha seats, Kanthi and Tamluk, both of which are known to be Adhikari family bastions. The BJP has already declared Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari’s brother Soumendu as its candidate from Kanthi.

Suvendu’s elder brother Dibyendu is the sitting MP from Tamluk. He won the election on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2019 but followed his brother to jump ship to the BJP.

Trinamool Congress has strongly reacted to the judge’s declaration of joining politics, saying it is thus proven that Justice Ganguly gave his verdicts against the ruling Trinamool Congress government out of political vindictiveness.

State Trinamool Congress General Secretary Kunal Ghosh, currently in the news for resigning from all party posts, has welcomed Abhijit Ganguly’s decision to join politics in a post on X but he too raised concerns on the judgments passed by Ganguly in the last two years.
