Zero Shadow Days in Kolkata — June 5 and July 7
Today, June 5 was the first of the two Zero Shadow Days in Kolkata in 2023. The next will be July 7, and the zero-shadow moment will take place exactly at 11.41 am.
This extraordinary phenomenon occurs twice a year when the Sun is directly overhead, causing objects to lose their shadows for a brief moment.
Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis by 23.5 degrees, the angle at which sunlight falls on the Earth’s surface changes throughout the year, resulting in the casting of shadows in different directions. However, on these special days, the rays of the Sun fall almost perpendicular to the surface of the Earth at noon, causing objects to appear without shadows.
