WhatsApp introduces ‘Communities’ feature, and several others

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned encrypted messaging platform, has introduced a new feature called ‘Communities’.

In a blog, WhatsApp has defined a ‘Community’ as a place which, “like neighborhoods, parents at a school, and workplaces”, connects “multiple groups together under one umbrella to organize group conversations on WhatsApp”.

The feature can be accessed by tapping the first tab in the app.

The primary benefits of WhatsApp Communities are:

  • Connecting related groups in one place
  • Keeping everybody in all the related groups informed with single announcements

This is the latest among sever new features introduced in recent times by the platform:

  • Reactions: Emoji reactions to quickly share their opinion on new messages
  • Larger Groups: Groups with up to 1,024 users
  • Admin Delete: Ability of group admins to remove errant or problematic messages
  • File Sharing: Share files up to 2 GB
  • Larger Call Groups: Up to 32 people can participate in audio and video calls
  • In-Chat Polls: Ability to create in-chat polls
