The Lighting Department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to replace the LED and vapour lights along the EM Bypass with warm white lights to provide improved visibility even in dense fog conditions.

Warm white light emits a light yellow hue, which is particularly advantageous in foggy conditions as it aids visibility by allowing the retina to focus on the road.

This type of lighting will be installed along the entire stretch from Ultadanga to Dhalai Bridge in Garia.

“Fog is a common occurrence, especially in the early morning, along the Bypass where vehicle speeds are typically higher, increasing the risk of accidents. We have tested the effectiveness of warm white lights and found them to be efficient even in dense fog. We anticipate the need to install 8000 lights along the 16 km stretch of EM Bypass,” stated Sandip Ranjan Bakshi, Member Mayor-in-Council, Lighting and Electricity.

A Lighting Department official mentioned that installation will commence once the annual KMC budget is finalised, which will have an allocation for this project.
