Kolkata Police (KP) made a sensational claim on Monday: Rajaram Rege, who was a part of the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, has been arrested by it after it came to light that he was part of a plot to carry out an attack on Abhishek Banerjee, the All India Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP. There may be other targets too. This was revealed by the KP in a media address.

This comes on the heels of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari saying on Saturday that there would be a “big explosion on Monday which will shake the TMC and its top brass”. He was giving a speech at an election meeting in Malda in support of party candidate Srirupa Mitra Choudhury.

AITC Chairperson and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too claimed that “the BJP is targeting me and Abhishek, we are not safe, but we are also not afraid of the saffron party’s conspiracy”, as quoted by the news agency PTI.

Rege was spotted in Kolkata recceing Abhishek Banerjee’s residence and office, and has also got access to his and his personal assistant’s phone numbers, claimed KP in the media address.

According to the preliminary investigation, Rege has also approached some people. He had put up at a hotel in south Kolkata from where he was carrying out his activities.

Rege is the same person who met the 26/11 Mumbai attack accused David Headley (currently serving a 35-year sentence in USA after pleading guilty to 12 international terrorism charges). Headley had said in his deposition as a prosecution witness in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack trial in a Chicago court that he had met Rege at Shiv Sena Bhavan in Dadar in central Mumbai.

The police is investigating and looking into further details of the matter.

It needs to be noted that Kolkata Police is also investigating a bomb attack hoax claim in which a letter to the police claimed that two “terrorists” named “Ching and Doll” were planning a series of bombings of government schools in the city.
