Tendulkar cautions against deepfake video featuring himself

January 16, 2024 | < 1 min read

Following in the footsteps of actors Alia Bhatt and Rashmika Mandanna, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has become the latest victim of a deepfake video.

The fraudulent video, circulating on social media, cunningly utilises Tendulkar’s voice and likeness to endorse a shady gaming app called Skyward Aviator Quest. The app promises quick financial gains and misleadingly claims that the icon’s daughter Sara is benefiting financially from it.

The legendary batter, in a clip circulated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), raised concerns on Monday regarding the fraudulent: “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology,” he says in the clip.

In the aftermath of the master blaster’s post, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to social media to express gratitude for raising awareness and pledged stringent action, announcing stricter regulations under the Information Technology Act would soon be notified.

The term ‘deepfake’ combines ‘deep learning’ and ‘fake’ to describe a form of AI that utilises machine learning to craft convincing image, audio and video hoaxes, altering or replacing appearances, speeches and actions of individuals.
