The India Meteorological Department has forecasted a wet week ahead for Kolkata and much of Bengal. According to its bulletin released on Friday, the region is expected to experience continuous rainfall over the next seven days due to cyclonic circulations.

Since May 6, Kolkata has been under the influence of rain, with the heaviest downpour of 62.2 mm recorded on Thursday, May 9, on which evening the districts of Kolkata, North 24-Parganas and South 24-Parganas witnessed thundersqualls, accompanied by winds blowing at speeds of 60-70 kmph, along with light to moderate rain and lightning. Additionally, hailstorms were reported in some parts of the city.

Thunderstorms with winds gusting up to 50 kmph are expected to persist in south Bengal until May 17. Districts like Birbhum, Nadia, Murshidabad, North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas and Purba Medinipur are likely to bear the brunt of these storms. Murshidabad and Purba Medinipur may see heavy rainfall ranging from 7-11 cm at one or two places.

The recent rainfall has brought relief to the state from the month-long heatwave. In the last two days, Kolkata experienced maximum temperatures ranging between 30 and 32°C, while the minimum temperatures hovered around 21-25°C.

On Friday, the weather remained mostly cloudy until the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 21.9°C.

Thundershowers are anticipated on Saturday evening.
