Meta, in partnership with the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), plans to launch an innovative WhatsApp helpline designed to counter the increasing threat of deepfakes in India.

Expected to be unveiled to the public in March 2024, this endeavour signifies a noteworthy advancement in tackling the issues stemming from AI-generated misinformation.

The helpline will initially offer support in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, and later on, more regional languages will be added.

To ensure the authenticity of information circulating on social media, MCA will establish a dedicated central deepfake analysis unit, which will scrutinise viral trends and individual reports, and flag the fake or misleading messages.

According to Meta, the WhatsApp helpline is based on four main objectives: detection, prevention, reporting and awareness.
