Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to be the next cyclone to hit India. The very severe cyclonic storm will intensify in the next 36 hours and will be heading north-northwestwards in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a tweet on Friday.

It is now over east-central Arabian Sea, which means that there is a good chance that the coasts of Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa and Karnataka will be spared. Strong winds, though, are expected along the coast.

But it also means that Cyclone Biparjoy, named by Bangladesh as per the system for naming cyclones by the northern Indian Ocean rim countries, might hit the Gujarat coast, or might bypass Gujarat and head towards Oman.

Surat Airport tweeted a little while back that it is “prepared to face potential Cyclone Biparjoy with utmost precautions and safety measures”.

Collectors of Gujarat’s coastal districts, including Kutch, Jamnagar, Dwarka and Porbandar, held meetings with officers of their respective district administrations to prepare for the likely impact of Biparjoy, reported The Indian Express.
