Chandrayaan-3 makes history
The spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 made history today by becoming the first to touch down near the Moon’s south pole.
With this, India has also become the fourth nation, after USA, Russia and China, to land a rover on the lunar surface.
The spacecraft’s Pragyan rover has rolled out on to the surface of the moon and is sending back pictures.
The south polar region is scientifically rewarding to explore because it is expected to have reserves of water ice, a valuable resource and a possible marker of life.
In 2008, Chandrayaan-1 had detected water molecules and hydroxyl radicals on the moon. Chanrayaa-2 was a failure as it crash-landed on the surface of the Moon in 2019.
