WFI elections on July 6; Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh not to contest

The Wrestling Federation of India will hold elections for the posts of president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members on July 6. Neither outgoing president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, embroiled in a sexual harassment controversy, nor his family members and associates will contest.

The much-awaited election for the post of president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will take place on July 6, the returning officer announced in a notification issued on Tuesday.

The outgoing president and BJP strongman Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh—embroiled in a sexual harassment controversy and the subject of a months-long protest, led by star wrestlers in support of those wrestlers, including a minor, who are alleging that they were sexually harassed—as well as his family members will not contest, sources told PTI on Tuesday. His son Karan Bhushan heads the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and his son-in-law Aditya Pratap Singh is head of the Bihar unit.

The WFI elections will be for the posts of president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members. It was also notified that the results of the elections will also be announced on same day.

The wrestlers had temporarily halted their protest till June 15 after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur assured them that neither Sharan Singh nor his family members and associates will be allowed to contest the impending elections.
