Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen raised a written question in the Rajya Sabha to the Ministry of Labour and Employment regarding the working conditions of tea garden workers in north Bengal. She inquired whether the Union government is aware of the hardships faced by these workers.

In response, the Union minister of state representing the ministry, Shobha Karandlaje essentially dismissed the issue by merely referencing the relevant law, stating that the welfare of tea garden workers and employees is governed by the Plantations Labour Act of 1951.

According to this law, it is the responsibility of the respective state governments to ensure that these workers and employees receive proper housing, healthcare and education.

In other words, the Modi government is not taking responsibility for the well-being of tea garden workers, leaving all the responsibility to the state governments.
