Uruguay won its first FIFA men’s Under-20 World Cup, better known as the Youth World Cup, on Sunday by beating Italy 1-0 in the final. This victory ended a streak of four consecutive wins of European teams in the tournament—France, Serbia, England and Ukraine in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Uruguay dominated the entire match but had to wait till the 86th minute for the goal—a header from close range by Luciano Rodríguez, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in La Plata, Argentina.

The South Americans could have taken the lead much earlier had it not been for the heroics of the Italy goalkeeper, Sebastiano Desplanches who saved a free kick by Luciano Rodríguez, two long-distance shots by captain Fabricio Díaz and a header by Anderson Duarte.
