India’s medals record in Paralympic Games

September 4, 2024 | < 1 min read

About one-and-a-half days after breaking its record for the highest tally of medals in a single day at any Paralympic Games, India on Wednesday morning (India time) broke its record of the total tally of medals in any Paralympic Games, by grabbing its 20th medal at the Paris Paralympics.

Both the records were set at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, held a year later in 2021 due to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. And both of them were broken at the ongoing Paris Paralympic Games.

India’s 20 medals comprise three golds, seven silvers and 10 bronzes. The earlier best haul was 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

The track and field athletes showcased their might for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, bagging five medals—two silvers and three bronzes—to take the country to the 17th place on days six of the quadrennial showpiece at 17th place.

Wednesday (Tuesday Paris time) saw India win four medals together in track and field—two in men’s high jump T63 event (Sharad Kumar a silver and Mariyappan Thangavelu a bronze) and two in javelin throw F46 event (Ajeet Singh a silver and Sundar Gurjar a bronze), which were held simultaneously. The fifth medal was won by world champion Deepthi Jeevanji, a bronze in the women’s 400m T20 category event.
