Trinamool’s celebrity MPs missing from Parliament

July 31, 2023 | 2 min read

The Trinamool Congress is a very important component of the INDIA alliance formed recently. It has been a part of all the protests and is also a part of the no-confidence motion moved against the NDA government.

However, Trinamool’s star MPs Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan have not attended any of the protests. As it is, these MPs have a reputation for being absent from their constituencies. On top of that, they are not lending support when such an important issue (Manipur) is demanding it.

Actor and MP Dev was seen, but only for a courtesy visit to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar, whom he described as a funny person.

Other than the celebrity MPs, the other Lok Sabha MPs of Trinamool have been dutifully following the orders of their whip. Asit Mal, Sajda Ahmed, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Saugata Roy and Kalyan Banerjee are working hard—be it attending protests, meetings or strategy sessions. Prasun Banerjee is also doing his part.

Four Lok Sabha MPs, of course, are absent due to medical reasons: Abhishek Banerjee for eye treatment abroad, Chowdhury Mohan Jatua for being ill for a long time, Mala Roy for injuring her leg and Abu Taher Khan for being in hospital.

People vote celebrities to power so that they can use their star status to bring the problems of their constituents before the eyes of the government. But what is the use of voting them to power if they ignore their constituents? This is definitely an uncomfortable position for the ruling party of Bengal.
