From Bengal, BJP nominates its state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya

All India Trinamool Congress has announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. While career politicians Sushmita Dev and journalist-turned-politician Nadimul Haque are making a return to the house, and Matua community leader Mamata Bala Thakur is making her debut (she was a Lok Sabha MP earlier), Mamata Banerjee’s party has given a shocker by nominating famed journalist Sagarika Ghoshe to the Council of States.

Ghose is a well-known face in the journalistic sphere of India. She was a prime-time anchor and deputy editor on CNN-IBN (till it changed its ownership and name to CNN-News18) and is the author of bestsellers like Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Why I am a Liberal.

Her husband Rajdeep Sardesai is a consulting editor and an anchor of India Today Television (India Today TV).

A total of 56 candidates will be elected to the Rajya Sabha from 15 states on February 27. Another 12 will be elected later in the year.

From Bengal, five candidates will be elected. Those retiring are Mohammed Nadimul Haque, Abir Ranjan Biswas, Subhasish Chakraborty and Santanu Sen from the Trinamool Congress and Abhishek Manu Singhvi from the Congress.

Since the Congress does not have any seats in the Bengal Assembly and BJP has 70, the latter will get to elect a member to the Rajya Sabha from the state for the first time, in place of Singhvi.

The BJP has selected its Bengal spokesperson and senior leader Samik Bhattacharya for the Rajya Sabha.
