The West Bengal Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has filed a show-cause notice against the BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, for a tweet in which he made defamatory allegations regarding the security arrangements for the birthday celebrations of the three-year-old son of Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP, Abhishek Banerjee.

Adhikari, also the Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, wrote:

“Grand Celebrations tonight at Taj Bengal!!! Security has been beefed up for the Birthday Party of Koyla Bhaipo’s son. Over 500 Policemen, Bomb Squad & Dog Squad have been deployed to Guard the venue. Door Frame Metal Detectors & Hand-held Metal Detectors are in place.

“Formal order hasn’t been issued for such Security Movement. ‘Mamata Police’ Officer; Jamal has been tasked to make the Security foolproof. Lady Kim’s family is following the footsteps of the Real Kim Jong-un of North Korea, at times beating him when it comes to grandeur & luxury.”

The WBCPCR, in a statement released today, described the tweet as “offensive and derogatory”. The state child rights agency further said in its statement that it is “in the process of issuing a show-cause notice” to Adhikari, a former state leader and MP of Trinamool Congress. Adhikari has been asked to respond to the notice tomorrow.

The complaint against Adhikari to the WBCPCR was lodged by one Shilpa Das, says the statement.

Social media has already erupted in protest against the dragging of a minor into a political controversy.
