Suchetana to Suchetan: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s daughter comes out as a transman

June 21, 2023 | < 1 min read

Former Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s daughter Suchetana has come out as a transman. She now wants to undergo sex change, according to a report on Anandabazar Digital.

The report says that she is talking to legal and mental health professionals for getting the necessary documentation done. She now wants to be known as Suchetan, and not Suchetana.

Her coming out was written about in a Facebook post by one Suprava Roy, one of the participants in a seminar titled ‘Access to Health of the LBBTQIA+ Community’, organised by the NGO, People’s Relief Committee on June 10 on the occasion of its 80th anniversary.

Suchetana, now Suchetan, was also a participant in that seminar, whose photo showing her/him talking at the seminar was also published by Suprava.

The post revealed that Suchetana was aware of herself as a man right from childhood, and her father too had recognised this.

In a separate social media post, Suchetana revealed that she is sure she would have the full support of her father and mother in this. She is now an independent person and so was taking an independent decision about how she wants to lead her life.

She has also written that she wants to associate herself with the LGBTQIA+ movement, which is more important to her than her recognition as a chief minister’s daughter.
