Success of films like Animal “dangerous”: Javed Akhtar

January 9, 2024 | < 1 min read

While talking at the Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival in Aurangabad, esteemed lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar said that he deems the success of films like Animal “dangerous”.

The lyricist expressed concern about a contemporary film’s success without explicitly mentioning the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial Animal.

He criticised the current trend in films, lamenting, “If a film portrays a man asking a woman to lick his shoe, or justifies slapping a woman, and that film becomes a blockbuster, it’s alarming.”

This commentary seems to allude to a controversial scene involving Ranbir Kapoor’s and Triptii Dimri’s characters in Animal, which has similarities to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s previous work, Kabir Singh, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani.

The group associated with the film has reacted to Akhtar’s remarks hinting at the film’s commercial achievements. The film’s official account on the X platform mentioned Akhtar and posed inquiries regarding his scripting abilities and comprehension of cinema.
