Security tightened in Kolkata following terror alert

The Kolkata Police has taken several measures, listed below, in view of terror alerts from security agencies.

In view of terror alerts from security agencies, security in Kolkata has been tightened. All forms of precautionary measures have been taken by Kolkata Police (KP), including deployment of commandos of its special forces, according to a senior officer of the force.

The key measures taken are:

  • A three-tier security arrangement in and around the city
  • Commandos of KP’s special battalion and striking force posted at 38 points
  • Of the 38, 18 teams in three divisions in the south and south-west parts of the city
  • The rest 20 teams in north Kolkata
  • 31 rapid patrolling teams
  • 13 quick response teams, that is, heavy radio flying squads (HRFSs) at important crossings like Gariahat, Rashbehari, Golpark, New Alipore, Central Chetla Road-Govinda Auddy Road and others
  • Police control rooms (PCRs) in charge at 26 points
  • Security beefed up at metro stations, marketplaces, shopping malls, popular monuments and important government offices
  • CCTV cameras and watchtowers made mandatory at large pandals
  • Community puja organisers asked to engage volunteers for detecting people moving suspiciously and if any found, to inform the police
