The latest records of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) show that road accidents in Bengal have come down significantly, and the figure is much lower than in several big states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

The latest data of the National Crime Records Bureau shows that there were 12,333 accidents in Bengal in 2019 which dropped to 10,743 in 2020. While 5,171 people died as a result of these accidents in 2020, 9,558 were left injured.

Significantly, the number of accidents is much higher in big states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is at number one, with 45,484 accidents last year.

In 2019, there were 2068 road accidents in Kolkata, which decreased to 1683 in 2020.

Road accidents in Kolkata too were much lesser than in other major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Indore, Jabalpur and Jaipur.

Citizens believe that this good record is due to the success of the ‘Safe Drive Save Life’ project initiated by the government of Bengal and the vigilance of the police.
