Following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Bengal government has decided to ensure that there are rooms for resting exclusively for female doctors at all the government medical colleges in the state.

Bengal has 26 government medical colleges and nine that are privately run.

While such rooms are there in some government medical colleges, in others, like even at a premier medical college-hospital like RG Kar, these are absent.

Discussions have also been held on installing (and where these are already there) increasing the number of CCTV cameras at strategic spots (entrances, exits, etc.) in hospitals. The number of security personnel at the gates will also be increased.
