The Croatia-based experiential travel online guide, TasteAtlas has selected Peter Cat in Kolkata as one of the 150 legendary restaurants in the world. In fact, the restaurant has been placed as high as 17th.

The other six from India are Paragon in Kozhikode (11th), Tunday Kababi in Lucknow (12th), Amrik Sukhdev Dhaba in Murthal (Haryana) (23rd), Mavali Tiffin Rooms (MTR) in Bangalore (39th), Karim’s in Delhi (87th) and Ram Ashraya in Mumbai (112th).

The list, published last Friday (June 23) includes restaurants from around the world, from family-run establishments to distinguished Michelin-starred venues. “These are not just places to grab a meal, but destinations in their own right, comparable to the world’s most famous museums, galleries and monuments,” says the introduction to the list.

Peter Cat’s famous dish is chelo kebab, a unique combination of Indian and Persian culinary practices. The restaurant was founded by Nitin Kothari in 1975 and is also famous for its ambiance and service.

Nitin Kothari narrated the origin of chelo kebab to The Telegraph in an article published after TasteAtlas’s list was published: “When I opened Peter Cat in 1975, the kebab sales started to soar, and this dish called chelo kebab began to dominate. To meet the demand, I had to add more tandoors. Traditionally, kebabs are eaten with naan, not rice. However, I’ve always had a fondness for rice, and it turns out the people in Kolkata share that preference. So, I pondered, why not create a dish that combines the best of both worlds? We added poached or fried eggs and a touch of butter. That’s how chelo kebab came about.”
