On February 27, the Indian Railways enacted a significant change to benefit commuters, reinstating the second class ordinary fare on trains previously labelled as ‘passenger trains’, now designated as ‘express specials’ or ‘MEMU/DEMU express’ trains.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the Railways gradually phased out passenger trains by altering their names. This transition eliminated the second class ordinary fare, raising the minimum ticket price from Rs 10 to Rs 30, bringing it in line with express train fare.

Now, responding to directives from the general managers of the zonal railways, the respective principal chief commercial managers have initiated modifications to the system to restore the second class ordinary fare.

As of the early hours of Tuesday (February 27, 2024), the Railways had implemented a 50 per cent reduction in the second class fare on all MEMU trains and those with numbers beginning with ‘0’.

Adjustments were also made to the fare structure in the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app.

This new fare reduction applies to all trains previously categorised as passenger trains, now operating as ‘express specials’ or ‘MEMU trains’ nationwide, according to official sources.
