A total of 117 athletes from 16 disciplines and a larger number of support staff than the last time—140 in all—will represent India in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The number of 117 includes the reserve players, as allowed in some of the sports.

The 33rd edition of the biggest multi-sport tournament in the world will start on Friday, July 26 (though some events have already started) and end on August 11.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics badminton bronze medallist Pusarla Venkata Sindhu and table tennis ace Achanta Sharath Kamal will be the flag-bearers at the opening ceremony, which will start at 11.00 pm Indian Standard Time (IST).

The previous Tokyo Games was represented by more athletes, that is, 127, but had a much lesser number of support staff, numbering only 101.

Additionally, this time, a 13-member sports science team, specially formed by the Indian Olympic Association and led by the esteemed sports medicine expert Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, will accompany the team.

“The athletes are at the centre of our planning and preparations. Instead of the usual 3:1 ratio between athletes and support staff, we have worked hard to change it to slightly better than 1:1 ratio. … For the first time, a 13-member sports science team under Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala will be in Paris to provide support,” IOA President PT Usha said on July 17, while announcing the Indian contingent.
