Noting the diminished power of India’s Opposition due to internal discord, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen highlighted the need for the Congress to address its organisational challenges.

In an interview to PTI, Sen suggested considering a caste census while emphasising the imperative for enhanced empowerment of marginalised communities through improved education and healthcare, and gender equality.

Sen underscored the importance of unity within the Opposition ranks, stating that this would significantly bolster its influence. He pointed out the organisational shortcomings within the Congress, urging the party to draw inspiration from its illustrious history.

Expressing criticism of the economic policies of the BJP-led NDA government, Sen argued that pervasive illiteracy and profound gender disparities impede the socioeconomic progress of India’s impoverished population. He lamented the tendency of India’s ruling elites to prioritise the interests of the affluent.

Regarding concerns raised by the Opposition regarding potential alterations to the Constitution by the BJP, Sen dismissed such changes as futile, asserting that they would only serve to align the Constitution with the government’s narrow religious agenda.
