No more elections in India if Modi returns: Nirmala Sitharaman’s husband

April 10, 2024 | 2 min read

Parakala Prabhakar, a well-known political economist and the spouse of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has issued a stark warning regarding the potential consequences of Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing a third term in office. He expressed concern that in such an event, the country might not witness any future elections.

In an interview, Prabhakar remarked, “If PM Modi secures another term with an absolute majority, do not anticipate further elections.” He emphasised the potential for significant constitutional and territorial alterations if Modi were to return to power. According to Prabhakar, “You would struggle to recognize the country under such circumstances.”

The economist highlighted the contentious remarks made by Dharma Sansad, suggesting that post-2024, similar hate speech could emanate from the Red Fort, possibly even delivered by Modi himself. Prabhakar warned that such speeches would be overt and unabashedly divisive, stating, “Hate speeches will be openly delivered.”

Further, Prabhakar cautioned against dismissing events in Manipur as isolated, asserting that what occurs there could unfold elsewhere, even in one’s own locality. He suggested that the turmoil seen in Manipur and Ladakh could extend nationwide.

The Congress party shared excerpts from the interview on social media, quoting Prabhakar’s assertion that a potential reelection of Modi in 2024 could spell the end of democratic elections in India. They underscored his prediction of constitutional changes and the likelihood of hate speech from the Red Fort, leading to situations akin to those in Ladakh and Manipur spreading across the entire nation.
