NIRF 2021: 7 educational institutions in Bengal among the top 10 in 6 categories; overall, 17 in the top 100 in all categories combined

Four institutions in Bengal are among the top 10 in their respective categories, according to the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings published on Thursday, September 9 by the Union Ministry of Education.

In the ranking of universities, Calcutta University (CU) is at number four in the country, followed by Jadavpur University (JU) at number eight. Both are universities under the state government.

Among colleges, St Xavier’s College is ranked 4th and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir, Howrah, 5th.

“Elated to share that as per NIRF India Rankings ’21, Calcutta University & Jadavpur University are the top ranking universities in India. Among colleges, St Xavier’s College, Kolkata & Ram Krishna Mission Vidyamandir, Howrah have also secured top ranks. Congratulations to all!” tweeted the state chief minister.

Two other institutions under Ramkrishna Mission achieved commendable rankings—Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Rahara is at number 15, followed by Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (in Narendrapur) at number 21. Bethune College in Kolkata is at number 77. This rounds off the top 100.

Among universities, Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan has been ranked 64th and the state-run Burdwan University is 85th, thus making it four universities from Bengal among the top 100.

Among business schools, IIM Calcutta is at the 3rd position in the country, after IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore. IIT Kharagpur is 5th among engineering colleges.

Among law schools, there are two from the state in the top 10—West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (4th) and IIT Kharagpur’s law school (5th).

In research, IIT Kharagpur has been ranked fifth, JU 17th, CU 33rd, IISER Kolkata (located in Kalyani) 34th, ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) 41st and IIEST Shibpur (formerly BE College) 48th.

These are as far as the category-wise rankings go. If the overall ranking is considered, according to NIRF 2021, there are seven educational institutions in Bengal ranked among the top 100: IIT Kharagpur (6), Calcutta University (11), Jadavpur University (14), IISER Shibpur (35), IIEST Kolkata (46), NIT Durgapur (71) and Visva-Bharati University (97).
