On the back of one of its worst run of matches in the Indian Super League (ISL), Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Wednesday announced the dismissal of coach Juan Ferrando.

At the same time, the Kolkata-based team appointed technical director Antonio Lopez Habas as the new head coach for the Kalinga Super Cup from January 9-28.

This will be Habas’s second stint with the club as head coach, after 2020-21 (when it was called ATK Mohun Bagan). Earlier he was with Atlético de Kolkata from 2014 to 16 and its later avatar ATK FC in the 2019-20 season.

Habas is the most successful coach in ISL, with two titles (in 2014 with Atlético de Kolkata and in 2019-20 with ATK FC) and a runners-up berth (in 2020-21 with ATK Mohun Bagan).

Mohun Bagan won its first ISL title (as ATK Mohun Bagan) in the 2022-23 season under Juan Ferrando.

As of now, Mohun Bagan holds the fifth position in the ISL 2023-24 points table, tallying 19 points and securing merely six victories in 10 matches. It has three defeats and a draw in its last five matches.

It is hoped that Habas will bring in a change of fortunes.
