Mishti Udyog’s ‘sweet’ initiative for Bengal

Mishti Udyog’s website aims to connect buyers with some of Bengal’s best sweet-makers through a website, keeping costs affordable

Feeling like satisfying your sweet tooth with chhanabora from Berhampore or sharpuriya from Krishnanagar? Or dreaming of mihidana from Bardhaman or jalbhara from Chandernagore for a Sunday afternoon?

Well, it would soon be possible to indulge your myriad sweet dreams with just a few clicks, thanks to an initiative by Mishti Udyog, an association of some of the best sweet-makers of Bengal. It has decided to start a website through which people can order sweets from all corners of Bengal—authentic sweets from all the original makers, something that was not possible before.

Soon, one would be able to taste the best from across the ‘sweetest part of India’ (as Bengal has been branded as for tourism purposes).

And not just that: Mishti Udyog – Sweets & Savouries Entrepreneurs’ Association of Bengal—which is the full name of the organisation—aims to deliver the goods at no exorbitant extra cost, unlike the food delivery apps.

The apps charge quite a bit extra, in fact, a commission of 30 to 32 per cent delivery, which often makes it unaffordable for consumers. Online ordering of sweets has become very popular over the period of the last one year because of the lockdowns.

Mishti Udyog hopes to successfully address this grouse regarding cost. It will only charge an amount as delivery cost, which would be affordable for most. Officials of the organisation say that its only aim through the website is to connect sellers and buyers to the advantage of both—increased sales for the former, especially given the fact that the pandemic has hit the earnings of many sweet-makers, and easy computer-based yet cost-effective access to sweets from across Bengal for the latter.

The organisation already has 200 of the best confectioners from across the state as its members. It aims to deliver sweets from the Sundarbans to the hills of Darjeeling.

A software firm from Bangalore is developing the food delivery website of Mishti Udyog.
