The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), headed by Amit Shah, today sent a letter to the Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) seeking details of the need for the additional 485 companies of Central armed police forces (CAPF), for which it has sent a requisition, for the panchayat elections, according to an SEC official.

The MHA also sought details of the deployment of the 337 companies which have already been sent.

The SEC had initially requisitioned 22 companies but asked for another 800 companies from the Home Ministry after the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court’s order directing that the number of companies must be more than those deployed during the 2013 panchayat elections.

The elections are to be held on July 8 in all the districts.
