2024 Lok Sabha election schedule declared

In a press conference in New Delhi today, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar declared the schedule of the 18th general election to the Lok Sabha.

The voting will take place in seven phases, with that in Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to stretch across all the seven phases. The counting is scheduled for June 4.

The dates for the seven phases are as follows:

  • First Phase: April 19
  • Second Phase: April 26
  • Third Phase: May 7
  • Fourth Phase: May 13
  • Fifth Phase: May 20
  • Sixth Phase: May 25
  • Seventh Phase: June 1

The chief election commissioner described India’s elections as a ‘pole star’ and a beacon of hope owing to its quality and quantity.

In the 2024 general election, 1.974 crore first-time voters are eligible to cast their votes, along with 48,000 transgenders and 2.18 lakh centurions (those aged 100 or above).

All booths will have drinking water facilities, separate toilets for men and women, and ramps for the differently abled.

For the first time, all voters aged above 85, of whom there are 82 lakh, as per the chief election commissioner, and individuals with more than 40 per cent disability will be delivered Form 12D for remote voting, if they opt for it.
