The average voter turnout in the first phase of the 2024 general election in Bengal, on Friday, April 19, was 81.86 per cent, which was the highest among the states in the first phase, as per the data available on the Voter Turnout app of the Election Commission.

As per the Election Commission, on Friday, voting took place for 102 Lok Sabha seats, in which 16.63 crore voters were eligible to vote at 1.87 lakh polling stations in 21 states and Union territories.

The average voter turnout for the 102 seats was more than 68.51 per cent.

In Bengal, three parliamentary constituencies in the northern part, viz., Alipurduars, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri, went to the polls.

The voter turnouts, as per the final Election Commission figures (available to the public through the Voter Turnout app), were as follows:

  • Alipurduars: 79.76%
  • Cooch Behar: 82.17%
  • Jalpaiguri: 83.66%

This was less than last time, though, when the figures were 83.79 per cent, 84.08 per cent and 86.51 per cent for Alipurduars, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri constituencies, respectively.

However, most of the candidates expressed satisfaction on the figures and both the BJP and Trinamool Congress candidates expressed confidence about winning.
