Twenty-four-year-old equestrian from Kolkata, Anush Agarwalla received the prestigious Arjuna Award from President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 9.

He won a gold and, along with the two other members of his team, won a bronze in the equestrian dressage event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, thus creating history by securing India’s first medals in the event. The gold was the second in the sport in the past 41 years while the bronze was the first medal in the team event.

A student of La Martiniere for Boys School, Anush initiated his equestrian venture at the Tollygunge Club’s tracks at the age of eight. Subsequently, he relocated to Delhi and later moved to Germany at the age of 17 for training under the guidance of Olympian Hubertus Schmidt.

The award was also bestowed upon Ayhika Mukherjee, a table tennis player hailing from Naihati, further enhancing the pride of Bengal’s sporting community.
