In the fiscal year ending 2024, the 154-year-old Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata reported a profit of Rs 501.73 crore, marking a 65 per cent increase compared to the previous fiscal (2023-24), when it touched a profit of Rs 304.07 crore.

Additionally, it achieved a record-high cargo handling volume of 66.4 million tonnes in 2023–24.

Chairman Rathendra Raman attributed the surge in cargo handling amidst geopolitical disruptions to a series of strategic initiatives undertaken by the port to enhance productivity, safety measures, business development and overall capacity utilization.

To bolster the port’s capacity, SMP is emphasising public-private partnerships (PPP) projects significantly.
