Pronam and Sukanya, two key programmes of the Kolkata Police’s Community Policing Wing, have been chosen for the prestigious SKOCH Award, given by SKOCH Group.

These two and all the other winners from across the country will be handed their awards at a programme in New Delhi on February 10.

While Pronam is for the welfare of senior citizens, Sukanya is an initiative to impart self-defence training to girl students in the city’s schools and colleges, according to a post on the social media platform X by Kolkata Police, announcing the award.

Pronam was launched in 2009 to help elderly citizens who live by themselves in Kolkata. It is a collaboration between Kolkata Police and the NGO, The Bengal.

The age of enrolment is now 60 years (initially it was 65). In May 2023, a helpline number was launched for Pronam— 9477955555. The project presently boasts around 24,000 members.

Sukanya was launched in 2014. It is focused on providing self-defence training to female students in schools and colleges. The objective is to empower them to protect themselves in challenging situations.

Reputed martial arts training agencies in the city collaborate to deliver self-defence training to the girls.

Approximately 10,000 female students receive self-defence training annually as part of the Sukanya project.
