In response to a significant accumulation of plastic waste on platforms, the Metro Railway, Kolkata is taking proactive measures to address the issue by installing plastic bottle crushers, with the first one being installed at Phoolbagan Station on the east-west line.

The initiative aims to deploy several such units at stations experiencing high passenger traffic and littering, including Esplanade. Following the inauguration of the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan segment on March 15, footfall at Esplanade Station, which serves as the connecting station between the north-south and east-west lines, has surged threefold.

“We are formulating a comprehensive strategy, which includes the installation of plastic bottle crusher machines at metro stations witnessing heavy passenger traffic,” stated Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer, Metro Railway, Kolkata, on Wednesday, April 3.

According to sources, Dum Dum and Rabindra Sadan on the north-south line and Howrah on the east-west line are the other stations on the schedule to receive the crushers after Esplanade.
