Kolkata again emerges as safest city for women
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in its annual report, Crime in India 2022, has said Kolkata is the safest city for women in the country. This is the third year in a row that the ‘City of Joy’, as it is often called, has emerged thus.
The basis of the NCRB’s conclusion comes from the fact that Kolkata has recorded the least number of cognisable offences per lakh (or 100,000) of population. Cognisable crimes are those for which cases are registered under sections of the IPL (Indian Penal Code) and SLL (special and local laws).
The eastern metropolis reported 86.5 cases of cognisable offences per lakh people in 2022, down from 103.4 in 2021 and 129.5 in 2020 (according to the previous years’ NCRB reports).
The next two spots in the list—comprising 19 cities, all with populations of over 20 lakh—are occupied by Pune and Hyderabad, with 280.7 and 299.2 cases of cognisable offences per lakh people, respectively.
The low level of crime means Kolkata is also an ideal city for travellers.
