Jannik Sinner created history on Sunday when he became the first Italian man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era (singles, doubles or mixed doubles). His Australian Open singles title was also the first since the 2014 one to not go to one of the Big Three of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.

His victory achieves greater significance when considering the fact that he defeated the top seed and world number one, as well as the defending champion, the great Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, and rather convincingly – 6-1 6-2 6-7 6-3.

The final, though, against third-seeded Daniil Medvedev (one above him) was very tough, and heart-breaking for the Russian. After winning the first two sets 6-3 6-3, he lost the next three 4-6 4-6 3-6.

Sinner became the eighth man to come back in a Grand Slam singes final from being two sets down. Medvedev, on the other hand, lost a Grand Slam final after being two sets up for the second time in his career, the last time being in 2022, also in the Australian Open (against Rafael Nadal). In 2021, he lost the final to Novak Djokovic.
