EC cancels nomination of Birbhum BJP candidate

April 26, 2024 | < 1 min read

The Election Commission has cancelled the nomination of Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate from Bengal’s Birbhum constituency, former IPS officer Debashish Dhar for filing faulty papers.

Yesterday, another person named Debtanu Halder filed his nomination with the Election Commission and claimed that he had been made the lotus party’s candidate from the constituency.

It is needless to say that the BJP got a whiff about some fault in Dhar’s nomination which may lead it to get rejected.

Sources within the Election Commission said that as Dhar is a former IPS officer, there is a specific protocol he should have followed while filing the nomination. He did not follow that protocol.

Debashish Dhar will approach the Kolkata High Court on an emergency basis to try to get a verdict today itself. Sources said that his legal team is applying to a division bench headed by Justice Rajshekhar Mantha.

Dhar was the superintendent of police (SP) of Coochbehar district when five people were killed by Central forces during the 2021 assembly elections. The state CID had launched an investigation against him for the alleged accumulation of disproportionate assets.
