Calcutta High Court has directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to deploy adequate Central forces in all the districts within 24 hours.

The bench, headed by the chief justice, also ordered that the state election commissioner must leave his post if he cannot do that. Former state secretary Rajiva Sinha was appointed the Bengal state election commissioner just before the announcement of the election date.

The High Court has also directed the SEC to bring in more Central forces than those deployed in the 2013 panchayat elections.

In 2013, 825 companies of central armed police forces (CAPF) were deployed, but the elections were also held in five phases.
