The decline in onion price by 14 per cent and tomato price by 3 per cent in December, compared to November, led to a month-on-month reduction of 3 per cent in the cost of a vegetarian thali and 5 per cent in the cost of a non-vegetarian thali or meal.

This is according to a report released by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics (MI&A) Research on Monday, titled ‘Rice Roti Rate’.

As broiler accounts for 50 per cent of the cost of a non-vegetarian meal, its faster month-on-month decline in December resulted in the higher decline in the cost of non-vegetarian meal.

With respect to a year-on-year basis That is, December 2023 compared to December 2022), a vegetarian thali’s cost rose by 12 per cent and a non-vegetarian thali’s cost declined 4 per cent.

The calculation of the average cost of preparing a thali at home takes into account input prices in north, south, east and west India. The data also highlights the key ingredients that contribute to the fluctuations in the thali’s cost, namely, cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas.
