Cyclone Midhili, developing over the Bay of Bengal for the last few days, is most likely to bypass India. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone is likely to cross the Bangladesh coast close to Khepupara on Friday night or during the early hours of Saturday.

Further, the bulletin said, there would be no severe damage to the coastal states. Coastal regions of Bengal, Odisha, and the northeastern states will receive heavy rainfall on Friday.

Purba Medinipur district administration officials told the news agency ANI said that rescue teams have been mobilised, including at the popular beach resort town of Digha, to deal with situations on a war footing

The name ‘Midhili’ (pronounced as ‘Midhili’) was given by the Maldives, and it means a huge tree, Ram Krishna Jaiswal, honourary consul of the Republic of Maldives in Kolkata said. The naming is as per the current naming convention for cyclonic formations in the northern Indian Ocean region. The name for the previous cyclone in this oceanic region, Hamoon, was given by Iran.
