CAA implementation before Lok Sabha elections: Amit Shah

February 10, 2024 | < 1 min read

Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Saturday, February 10 that the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 will be notified and enforced prior to the Lok Sabha elections.

“Our Muslim brothers are being misled and instigated (against the CAA). The CAA is only meant to give citizenship to those who came to India after facing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. It is not for snatching anyone’s Indian citizenship,” he said at the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2024.

He stated that implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand signifies a significant social change, subject to thorough discussions across all platforms and legal scrutiny. He emphasised that a secular nation cannot endorse civil codes based on religion.

Citing the abrogation of Article 370, Shah also expressed his confidence in the BJP securing 370 seats and the NDA coalition surpassing 400 seats in the forthcoming general election to the Lok Sabha.

Regarding the potential expansion of the NDA to include parties like RLD, Akali Dal and TDP, among others, he stated that while discussions are ongoing, nothing has been finalised, affirming that the BJP does not believe in “family planning” in politics (a reference to the Gandhi family-led Congress) and always welcomes new allies.
