March 27, 2024 | < 1 min read

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Sajal Ghosh, one of its prominent figures in Bengal, to contest from the Baranagar assembly constituency in the upcoming by-election on June 1.

For the Bhagwangola assembly seat, where polling is scheduled for May 7, the party has chosen Bhaskar Sarkar, a local leader from Murshidabad district.

The resignation of the former Trinamool Congress leader Tapas Roy led to the by-election for the Baranagar seat while the Bhagwangola seat became vacant following the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Idris Ali on February 16. Tapas Roy joined the BJP after resigning and has been nominated from the Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency.

Both Roy and Ghosh had been associated with the Congress before switching to the Trinamool Congress at different points in time. Ghosh made the transition to the BJP in 2021 and is a councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Roy changed parties as recently as March 6.
